Speech Pathology PL Session for Early Primary Teachers: Developmental Language Disorder Workshop

This professional information session is designed for teachers in the early primary years who want to build their understanding of developmental language disorder (DLD) and its impact on learning, communication and classroom participation.

The 1.5 hour workshop will explain how DLD can affect students’ ability to understand and use spoken language, and how these difficulties can influence literacy development, following instructions, vocabulary learning, narrative skills and engagement across the school day.

Teachers will gain practical insight into the common signs of DLD in early primary students, including challenges with understanding questions, learning new words, expressing ideas clearly and managing the language demands of the curriculum. It also highlights the important role of collaboration between teachers and speech pathologists in supporting the identification, adjustment and inclusive teaching practices for students with DLD.

  • What developmental language disorder is and how it may present in early primary classrooms
  • How DLD affects oral language, literacy, listening comprehension and participation in learning
  • Early indicators teachers may notice in students with persistent language difficulties
  • Practical classroom adjustments, including visual supports, simplified language, repetition and structured scaffolding
  • How teachers and speech pathologists can work together to support students with DLD effectively

This is a FREE workshop and registration (below) is essential.
